State/Lake Elevated Station Temporary Closure
How does this affect my trip?
Effective, Monday, January 5, 2026, the State/Lake Loop Elevated station will temporarily close.
Please use the accessible Clark/Lake or Washington/Wabash stations, located within a few blocks of the State/Lake station. To transfer between the Red Line at Lake station and the Loop ‘L’ lines, use Washington/Wabash.
Why is service being changed?
The new State/Lake elevated station is scheduled to open in 2029. It will replace one of the oldest stations on the CTA rail system with a modern facility designed to improve safety, accessibility, and comfort for all riders.
Upcoming Service Alerts
No Orange Line Loop service; Bus substitution between Loop and south stations
There will be no Green Line service between the Loop and 35th-Bronzeville-IIT station; trains run in two sections:
- Between Harlem/Lake and the Loop (making all stops around the Loop ‘L’, on the Outer Loop track/Brown Line side—board as usual at stops along Wabash and Lake for Harlem) and
- between 35th-Bronzeville-IIT and Ashland/63rd-Cottage Grove, only.
For service between downtown and 63rd street destinations, consider Red Line (including to Sox-35th for free transfer to continuing Green Line trains with valid farecard) or free shuttle buses between Harold Washington Library-State/Van Buren and 35th-Bronzeville-IIT.
To reach shuttles from downtown toward 35th:
- From the Wells and Van Buren sides of the Loop, take a Brown Line or rerouted Green Line train to H.W. Library.
- From the Lake and Wabash sides of the Loop, take a Pink Line train to H.W. Library.
There will be no Orange Line service between the Loop and Halsted station; trains run between Midway and Halsted, only.
Shuttle buses will run between Halsted and Harold Washington Library-State/Van Buren stations with intermediate stop at Roosevelt and Cermak-Chinatown for Red Line connections.
To reach shuttles from downtown toward Halsted:
- From the Lake and Wabash sides of the Loop, take a Pink Line train to H.W. Library.
- From the Wells and Van Buren sides of the Loop, take a Brown Line or rerouted Green Line train to H.W. Library.
We’re performing track maintenance to ensure that trains continue to operate safely on the Green and Orange Lines.
